Firstyl What Is CRISPR:
CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats) is a family of DNA sequences found in the genomes of prokaryotic organisms such as bacteria and archaea. These sequences are derived from DNA fragments of bacteriophages that had previously infected the prokaryote. They are used to detect and destroy DNA from similar bacteriophages during subsequent infections. Hence these sequences play a key role in the antiviral (i.e. anti-phage) defence system of prokaryotes.
Cas9 (or “CRISPR-associated protein 9”) is an enzyme that uses CRISPR sequences as a guide to recognize and cleave specific strands of DNA that are complementary to the CRISPR sequence. Cas9 enzymes together with CRISPR sequences form the basis of a technology known as CRISPR-Cas9 that can be used to edit genes within organisms. This editing process has a wide variety of applications including basic biological research, development of biotechnology products, and treatment of diseases..
CRISPR A.I.
CRISPER A.I. is a theorised use of CRISPR Cas9. In which edited genome can be spliced with technology specifically medical growth apparatus, in order to grow grey matter and other brain cell components. This is an alternative to purely mechanical A.I. and would hypothetically result in A.I. with a life span due to its natural composition. It poses ethical questions about creating life and wheater or not it is morally correct or incorrect, it is also as a theory addresses what little difference their could be between naturally formed human brains and synthetic ones.
This is a really interesting and revealing look into the future where bio-engineering might blur the line between man-made and grown, creating biological material that despite being created in a lab, could result in several phenomena such as cloning, designer babies, sentient A.I. and technology that has essentially a life span like an animal does. It’s because of this I find A.I. and the idea of ‘growing’ it to be so interesting as it allows me as an artist to attempt to imagine the future and what that could look like. It bestows on my art an almost fantasy element yet also a very real scientific element, allowing me to explore subjects that are contemporary and talked about. In short, I can make work that people already have a lot of intrigue about.
