– Brain Garden –

Last term I toyed with the theme of biomechanics and the aesthetics of artificially grown brains. This runs in contrast to the more popular mechanical aesthetics I’ve seen when it comes to the topic of A.I. in art and how a lot of artists represent it.

For me as an artist I see the future as a marriage between nature and synthetics, with technology used to grow and rear artificial intelligence as opposed to being what will eventually comprise it. I believe that being able to grow natural material is inherent in future human survival, whether this be growing meat substitutes for consumption as well as GM foods, organs for transplants, artificial wombs and sperm and obviously the planting of more trees for oxygen and the inevitable forestry humans will have to do to look after the planet. Growing is something I see as a key part in the formation of solutions to contemporary modern problems, as an artist I would like to explore this potential future vision of I have of growing A.I. and present what I call ‘The Brain Garden’, a place in which these brains are grown to specifications. As the artist, I want to be the gardener and I want my audience to feel like they are seeing something truly futuristic and feel like they are the gardeners too.

These brains are sort of like flowers without petals, strange and intriguing and without being totally natural and still possessing their digital aesthetic. This will represent the ‘marriage between nature and synthetics.

I got the inspiration for this from neutral networks and projects such as CRISPR A.I. where they attempt to recreate a brain using cells and synthetic material.
