TeamLab Artist Group

“teamLab (f. 2001) is an art collective, interdisciplinary group of ultratechnologists whose collaborative practice seeks to navigate the confluence of art, science, technology, design and the natural world. Various specialists such as artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, mathematicians and architects form teamLab.

teamLab aims to explore a new relationship between humans and nature, and between oneself and the world through art. Digital technology has allowed art to liberate itself from the physical and transcend boundaries. teamLab sees no boundary between humans and nature, and between oneself and the world; one is in the other and the other in one. Everything exists in a long, fragile yet miraculous, borderless continuity of life.

teamLab’s works are in the permanent collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide; Asian Art Museum, San Francisco; Asia Society Museum, New York; Borusan Contemporary Art Collection, Istanbul; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; and Amos Rex of Helsinki, Finland. “

Memory of Topography;

This artwork installation depicts a rural mountain landscape of varying elevations. The scenery instills in the viewer a feeling of eternal permanence, however with the flow of real time the scenery is continuously changing. In the spring, the rice fields are still small and lush. In summer, they begin to mature, and in fall, they turn a golden color. And with the flow of time, the insects and flowers that make an appearance also change. The movement of insects is influenced by the movement and actions of people. And as people move around, the flow of air changes and blows the rice plants or scatters flower petals in different directions.

The overall appearance of this work will hardly change with each year. However, as in nature, the scenery is actually changing, and you will never see the same scenery twice. This moment will never be repeated and can never be seen again. Seemingly unchanging landscapes go on year after year for eternity.

The work and the canvas that mediates it are separated – the canvas has become transformative. The visual illusion produced by continuous dynamic change causes the viewer to become bodily immersed in the work, and the border between the viewer and artwork dissolves. As the unified world changes, viewers may feel a sense of melting into the world, becoming one with it and with each other.

The Columns:

“A group of standing waterfall columns.

When people approach, the flow of the water changes.

The waterfalls are influenced by other artworks. When there is a lot of water in the artwork overhead, Universe of Water Particles on a Rock Hill where People Gather, more water flows in this work. When there is not much water in the other work, the water in The Columns depletes.

This artwork also influences other works. The water that flows down The Columns applies power and force to the currents in the artwork Moving Creates Vortices and Vortices Create Movement spread across the floor.

Water in the artwork is expressed as a continuum of numerous particles and the interaction between the particles is calculated. Lines are drawn according to the trails of the particles. The cumulation of lines that represent the work are then “flattened” in line with what teamLab considers to be ultrasubjective space.

The work is continuously and eternally changing, influenced by people and other artworks, while influencing other works itself.”

Light Vortex:

“Light Sculpture – Line series. When the lines of light converge space is reconstructed into a three dimensional object. Because both the space around you and the space created are made of light, your body becomes part of the experience.

CONCEPT Light Sculpture – Line Lines of light reorganize the space and create three-dimensional objects as they converge, allowing you to immerse yourself fully in them. For a physical learning experience – dance and experience the art not with your mind, but with your body. “

The Infinite Crystal Universe:

Pointillism uses an accumulation of distinct dots of color to create a picture, here light points are used to create three-dimensional objects. This interactive artwork expresses the universe through accumulated light points that spread infinitely in all directions.

People can use their smartphones to select elements that make up the universe by dragging them and releasing them into the The Infinite Crystal Universe. Each element released influences that of other elements and is influenced by the presence of people in the space.

The work is created by people in the space and is thus continuously changing forever.”
