ON DIFFERENCES: NET.ART AND GLITCH ART

Net Art is defined as a genre of art that concerns itself with the online space and the culture surrounding the hardware and the software of the internet. Its useful for discussing and exploring that aspect of technology but exists as a specific term for a specific genre of work, that being those focused on the internet and its effects on culture. Since my artwork this term has less to do with the internet (though it is still key to the idea of technology and the easy ability to share images) it does not encompass the other methods and ideas of my project, which are broader and less anchored to the idea of the internet but instead technology as a whole. However it is still a term I would use to describe my work and specific aspects of it such as my videos and audio which utilize downloaded content used to remix and refer to form of social media.

Glitch Art is defined as artwork that utilizes glitches or creates the aesthetic of a glitch for an artistic purpose, whether through legitimate means or generated with a program. This term applies better to my work as it describes the exact method of how I create it and leaves the message of the work and its intentions open-ended and is thus a term that can have broader meaning. In fact it might be better to say that the message of my work is in line with Net Art, but the method of production is more in line with Glitch Art, which could also be considered a form of Net.Art when used to create work like that of mine. However the Gifs I created are more of a head nod to technology and do not necessarily hint at the internet and thus would only fall under the term of glitch as
